Lawn Basics

What Causes Yellow Grass?

Yellow turf means the plant is not producing or holding chlorophyll normally. Several very different conditions can cause that, so the practical approach is to look at where the yellowing appears before assuming it needs fertilizer.

Uniform yellowing across the lawn

When the whole lawn fades together, nutrition, soil pH, temperature, or watering are more likely than a localized pest or disease. A soil test is the most direct way to find out whether nutrients are actually limited or simply unavailable.

Stripes and geometric patterns

Yellow lines that match how you walk a spreader or mow suggest equipment or application, not biology. Overlapping passes concentrate product; missed passes leave hungry strips.

Isolated spots

Small, well-defined yellow spots, especially in areas a pet uses regularly or where something was spilled, usually have a local explanation rather than a lawn-wide one.

Yellow blade tips after mowing

Dull blades tear rather than cut. Torn tips dry out and discolor within a day or two, giving the whole lawn a hazy yellow cast at a distance. Sharpening usually resolves it within a mowing cycle or two.

Put this to work on your lawn.
